| CUSTOMER REVIEWS: | 4/5 - A truly polished performance If you're reading this and you're a fan then I'm sure you'll agree that this is a lot smoother than her Hips & Makers album. I think she's a strong artist and her sound, though an acquired taste, appeals to many. I've seen the Throwing Muses twice and Ms Hersh once as a solo performer and class myself as a fan. Her music is always within reach. It's definitely one to own, but I do prefer her first album, especially the track "Your Ghost".
5/5 - Enchanting, as always While some (uninitiated) people might hear Kristin Hersh and think of her as a folk singer, I think of her as a gifted storyteller. Kristin doesn't just sing, she paints abstract pictures. There's always been a certain sense of wonder, surrealism and the lonely unknown in her music (probably due to all those minor keys). Her lyrics can make you ache. At once loud and soft, elated and lonely, comfortable and painful, Sunny Border Blue does not disappoint unless you are expecting Kristin Hersh to, well, not be herself. There is a folksy (almost western) influence in her music to be sure, but Sunny Border Blue is still musically twisted and lyrically moody, closer in style to her last album, Sky Motel, than her earlier ones. Although I've only listened to the album a handful of times (it was just released yesterday), the song I like the best is Listerine. Listerene uses layers of sound: backing vocals and spoken word underneath Kristin's singing. Silica and Flipside are also lovely, but I enjoy the entire album from start to finish. This may possibly be my favorite album of 2001 (although Massive Attack or Portishead might have releases and then it'll be tough). So let's just say that this album will make my top 5. Kristin Hersh just gets better and better.
5/5 - Emotional and personal Kristin Hersh has now made an album which she can truly say is her's. Not that i'm saying her other album weren't "her's", but this is so honest, truthful and emotional that you cannot doubt it. I was privilaged to see her live recently, and the songs from this album which she played seemed to be the ones that she was most comfortable with.
She has the ability to condense her anger, frustration, love, fear and experiences into beautiful and incredibly emotional music. There are times when this album will hit you hard with such sadness and then others when it can sooth, sometimes even be uplifting.
A truly beautiful and honest album. A must-buy. |
